HISTORY OF BAKE SKILLS

The Australian Baking Industry National Scholarship Awards (ABINSA) have established themselves as "The Industry's awards" and are available to all individuals involved in the baking industry.

The Australian Baking Industry National Scholarship Awards were established and launched in 1991 with a view to providing the Baking Industry with a premier National vehicle that promotes thought, discussion, debate and action on key issues that affect it between now and the year 2050. Based on a written essay format on nominated and topical Industry subjects, the Scholarships are available to virtually ALL individuals involved in the baking industry.

In its inaugural year of 1991, 85 persons applied to enter, 23 papers were received and 68 attended the first Awards for Excellence and Gala Ball. Whilst these numbers have fluctuated up and down since that time, by 2011 (the Scholarship’s 21st birthday year), some 146 + industry personnel had won regional travel scholarships, with 41 going on to experience overseas trips to scholarship destinations in North America; France, Germany, England and Asia.

The Awards for Excellence & Gala Ball has also rapidly established itself as the Industry’s premier black tie function, being regularly attended and enjoyed by 90 to 140 distinguished industry personnel each year. In 2006, a further initiative was introduced with the Awards night becoming a feature of the Australian Society of Baking’s Chairman’s dinner.

During these formative years, Industry support and extensive publicity have been dual features of the scholarships. The introduction of a 2nd category – the Baking Industry Medal for the 18 to 24 age group – has also provided our younger generation with the opportunity to not only display their technical & industry knowledge, but to also be rewarded in a positive way for it. In 2006, the Baking Industry Medal was renamed in honour of the founder of the Australian Society of Baking and baking industry identity, the late Sydney J Packham OAM.

Together with the established Arthur E Denison Trophy for the “over 25’s”, the Australian Baking Industry National Scholarship Awards have, in the words of a past winner, established themselves as “The Industry’s Awards”!
